Bonding can make chipped teeth look complete and healthy in a single appointment.

What Can Dental Bonding Do?

Bonding involves applying a special resin to the teeth to address a range of cosmetic issues, including:

  • Chipped or cracked teeth
  • Discoloration and staining
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Short or worn teeth
  • Disproportionate teeth

Dr. Strain can also use bonding to repair decayed teeth as an alternative to traditional silver amalgam fillings.

If your teeth are healthy but require minor cosmetic alterations, bonding may be right for you. Depending on your goals and oral health, Dr. Strain may recommend an alternative treatment, such as porcelain veneers, or an orthodontic procedure such as Invisalign®.

The Benefits of Bonding

Dental bonding is one of the simplest and least expensive cosmetic dentistry procedures. Unlike other treatments, such as veneers and crowns, which require restorations to be made in a lab over the course of two weeks or longer, Dr. Strain can perform an entire bonding procedure in one office visit.

This treatment is also very conservative. Unlike veneers or crowns, little to no enamel is removed during bonding. Many patients can complete their bonding procedure without any anesthetic. However, we can offer both local anesthetic and sedation upon request.

The Bonding Process

In general, dental bonding takes about 30 to 60 minutes per tooth. Many patients complete their entire treatment in less than an hour. There is very little preparation involved in bonding.

Before beginning, Dr. Strain will use a shade guide to select the right color of composite resin. Then, he will apply a conditioning liquid that will help the resin material bond properly with your enamel.

For patients with minor cosmetic flaws, dental bonding offers an opportunity to feel more confident about their smiles.

Once your teeth are ready, Dr. Strain will apply the composite resin and use a special light to harden the material. Next, Dr. Strain will cut and shape the resin to ensure it covers flaws without affecting your bite. Finally, he will polish the tooth to achieve a natural appearance.

Caring for Your Bonded Teeth

With proper care, bonding can last up to 10 years before needing a touch-up or replacement. Brush and floss daily and rinse with an antiseptic mouthwash. You should also attend regular cleanings and checkups at our office so Dr. Strain can monitor the health of your teeth.

It is important to keep in mind that bonding material is not as strong as your natural teeth. You should avoid potentially damaging habits, such as:

  • Biting fingernails
  • Chewing on pens, ice, or other hard objects
  • Using your teeth as a tool
